I was going to spend today exploring the other half of the beach. It's just a beach, right? What could go wrong?
A lot. A lot could go wrong.
First, I went to explore this little grotto that offshoots from the beach proper. It was all fun and games at first, basically just a bunch of treasure rocks. Then, all of a sudden, fucking Stalnox.
The Stalnox, as you can see, is a skeleton version of the Hinox, a giant cyclops creature. And on one hand, I was excited to see it because - like the Lynel - there's never been a Hinox in a 3D Zelda game before. (This, by the way, makes me wonder if enemies can be used to help determine timeline placement. I'll have to look more into that.) But on the other hand, it was freaking frightening and I was definitely not prepared to face it. I basically just hid in a cave until it disappeared by morning light.
Shortly after that, I met a woman named Loone, and she's aptly named as you'll soon see. Loone was reclining on the beach, with her arms wrapped around her love like she's in a Frank Frazetta painting. Except her love is an ancient ball. She loves ancient things, you see. She's named the ball Roscoe. I happen to need Roscoe to put in a nearby plinth that will open a shrine, but I don't know how to get it from her yet.
This section of the beach was covered in broken down Guardians, which is great for getting ancient parts, but terrible because that often means there's a live Guardian nearby. And there was. It was one of the Beamos ones. And there was no cover. There were trees, but fat lot of good they did. Needless to say, I did not defeat this Guardian. Not even close.
I can't stress enough that I'm really not supposed to be in this area yet.
You think the rest of the beach gave me some respite? Only if you think gangs of Lizalfos and mounted Bokoblins can be considered respite. They were at least defeatable, though. And on the plus side, I did manage to get my new most powerful bow and sword from this area. And then I accidentally wandered into an uncharted region. I thought each region would be clearly delineated from each other the way Faron is separated from the Great Plateau and whatever the Gerudo region is called, but that is clearly not the case.
Around this time I took a break to participate in the Pokemon GO Community Day.
With the beach now fully(?) explored, I turned my attention to the rest of Faron. It was mostly just fighting Lizalfos, but early on I saw a pinwheel on a hill so I went to explore it. I knew it denotes a Korok puzzle, but last time the Korok appeared and I had to shoot its balloon. This time no Korok appeared, so I wasn't sure what was going on. And it took me a while to figure it out. Eventually I saw some things rising and falling over the cliff's edge, but as I got closer, they weren't there. Then they were back. Then they were gone. What's happening is that they were these rising and falling acorns that only appeared if I were standing next to the pinwheel, and they only juuuuust came up over the cliff edge. I had to shoot all three of them with arrows, despite barely being able to see them. I succeeded.
The rest of this area was pretty much all Lizalfos. So many Lizalfos. I discovered the chameleon appearance wasn't just for show and they can sort of blend into their surroundings, which is neat. I also discovered something called a Sneakstrike, which is a special move you can use if you manage to sneak up behind an enemy, and on all the Lizalfos at least, it was always a one hit kill. Pretty sweet and very useful.
At this point, my exploring got interrupted by my Shiekah Sensor, so I went way out of my way to discover it. It was in a new place called Faron Woods that I didn't look around too much, but it seems really cool and kind of spooky. The challenge was called "A Minor Test of Strength". It wasn't terrible, but it was completely different than I was expecting. All of the shrines so far have been puzzles with maybe one or two small enemies, but this one was a boss fight, more or less. At least a miniboss fight. There was a Guardian inside with several, very powerful attacks, and I had to defeat it. Let me see if I can remember all of them. It had a sword and shield and did basic sword and shield moves. It had a spin attack that took it all over the room. It had this spinning laser attack that created some kind of wind vortex. And it had a crazy laser attack that took forever to charge up, but once it did, released several laser blasts in a row that definitely killed me when they hit me.
For my troubles, I got an ancient sword and shield that are way too high tech to be in a Zelda game, but they're cool af so I don't care (that's them in the picture above). And I got a boomerang!
...which I immediately lost. I mentioned in a previous post how arrows arc in this game so I've had to forget everything previous Zelda games taught me. Same with the boomerang. You have to press A to catch these things! And if you don't, well...I hope you weren't standing on the edge of a cliff or that thing is gone baby gone.
I got another Korok or two, but that was the last major thing I did for the night. I wanted to keep playing but I had laundry and other chores to do. Next time I plan to finish exploring the tableland region I'm in now, and maybe I'll even make it back to Faron Woods!
